A blockage is usually a symptom
Clearing a blocked drain is the quick part. The useful part is knowing why it blocked. Sometimes the answer is simple, such as fat, wipes or a child's toy, and once it is cleared the drain is fine. Often there is something in the pipe that caught it. A root through a joint, a step where two lengths have moved apart, or a dip where the line has lost its fall.
That is the difference between a drain that blocks once and a drain that blocks every winter. We are drainlayers, so when we clear a line we can also tell you what is behind it and fix that too. If the pipe is damaged, a drain repair is what stops the call outs.
How we clear it
Most blockages are cleared with a water jetter. It sends a hose down the line and uses high pressure water to break up the blockage and wash the pipe walls clean. Where roots are the cause, a cutting head takes them out so the drain flows again.
If the drain has blocked before, we follow the jetter with a camera. The inspection shows whether the pipe is sound or whether the roots will be back, and you get that answer on the day instead of in six months.
When it is a drainlayer you need
Plumbers and drainlayers hold separate licences in New Zealand. As a rough guide, a blockage in one fixture inside the house, such as a single basin, is plumbing. A blockage that affects several fixtures at once, or shows up as a gully trap overflowing outside, is in the drain underground, and that is drainlaying work.
Stormwater blocks as well. If water is ponding by the downpipes or across the yard in rain, the fault may be in the stormwater line. That is covered on our stormwater and yard drainage page.
