What the camera actually finds
A drain camera is a small waterproof camera on a flexible rod. We feed it into the line from an access point and watch the picture as it travels. It shows tree roots through joints, cracks and breaks, lengths that have moved out of line, dips where water sits, and blockages of fat, silt or debris.
It also measures. The rod is marked for distance, so we know how far along the pipe each fault sits, and the camera head can be located from the surface to give its position and depth. That is what lets a repair be dug in the right place the first time.
Before you buy a house
A standard building inspection looks at what can be seen. It does not put a camera down the drains. In an older Christchurch home the drains can be the most expensive unknown on the property, and they are the one part nobody at the open home can look at.
A pre purchase drain inspection takes that unknown away. If the pipes are sound you buy knowing it. If they are not, you have footage showing the fault, which is something to take into the negotiation.
What you get afterwards
You get a plain explanation of what the camera found, where it is on the line and how deep. If there is a fault we tell you what would fix it and what we would leave alone. Not every imperfection in an old pipe needs digging up, and we will say so.
If work is needed, the same crew can do it. A damaged length goes to drain repairs, and a line that needs replacing end to end is drainlaying. Stormwater lines can be inspected the same way, which is often the first step in sorting yard drainage.
